Are Current Events the Unfolding of Biblical Prophecy?

Signs We May Be Living in the Last Days

Why I Believe We May Be Living in the Last Days and Why the Return of Christ Could Be Near!

This article explores current events through the lens of biblical prophecy and Scripture.

Key Signs Many Christians Believe Point to the Last Days

Before diving deeper, here are several developments many believers believe align with the warnings Jesus gave about the last days:

  • Rapid moral and cultural shifts that challenge biblical values
  • Increasing global conflicts and geopolitical instability
  • Rising division, hostility, and lawlessness within societies
  • Natural disasters and environmental upheaval affecting large regions
  • Growing deception and confusion about truth
  • The increasing discussion of global economic control and digital systems

These signs do not allow us to predict the exact timing of Christ’s return, but they do remind believers of Jesus’ instruction to remain watchful.

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42 (KJV)

A Time to Wake Up

For thousands of years, Christians have watched the world around them and wondered if they might be living in the generation that witnesses the return of Jesus Christ.

Scripture tells us to be watchful.

Scripture Note: Unless otherwise noted, all Bible verses in this article are quoted from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” — Luke 21:28 (KJV)

Jesus did not tell His followers to live in fear, but He did tell us to pay attention to the signs of the times.

Over the past several years, especially between 2021 and 2024, events unfolding in America and around the world have caused many believers to pause and ask a serious question:

Are we witnessing the early stages of biblical prophecy unfolding right before our eyes?

The cultural shifts have been dramatic.

Practices and ideologies that would have shocked previous generations are now promoted openly as normal. Moral boundaries that once formed the foundation of society are being erased or rewritten. Truth itself seems to be under constant attack.

At the same time, the world stage has grown increasingly unstable.

Nations are rising against one another. Political divisions have reached levels many people never imagined possible. Violence, unrest, and hostility seem to be increasing both at home and abroad.

Add to that the growing frequency of powerful storms, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, and it begins to feel as if the entire world is groaning under a weight it can barely carry.

The Bible warned that a time like this would come.

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times shall come.” — 2 Timothy 3:1 (KJV)

This article is not written to scare anyone.

It is written because I believe we are living in a time when spiritual wake-up calls are happening all around us.

Some readers may find parts of this discussion uncomfortable. That is not my intention, but I will not soften what Scripture says in order to avoid offending anyone.

If the events of our time truly are pointing toward the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, then the most important question any of us can ask is this:

Are we spiritually ready for what comes next?

In the sections ahead, we will examine several major developments happening in our world today and compare them with what the Bible says about the conditions that would exist in the last days.

Every claim will be backed by Scripture — God’s Word.

Because when it comes to understanding the times we live in, there is no greater authority than the Word of God.

The Moral Shift in Society and the Warning of Scripture

Anyone who has been paying attention over the past several years can see that something profound is happening in our culture.

The speed at which moral standards are changing is unlike anything many Americans have witnessed in their lifetime. Ideas and behaviors that once existed on the fringes of society are now openly promoted as normal, celebrated in public institutions, and even taught to young children.

For Christians who hold to biblical truth, these changes are not merely cultural shifts — they are spiritual warning signs.

The Bible warned long ago that the last days would be marked by widespread moral confusion and rebellion against God’s design.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.” — 2 Timothy 3:1 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul went on to describe what those times would look like.

“For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good.” — 2 Timothy 3:2–3 (KJV)

When many believers read this passage today, it is difficult not to notice the parallels between Paul’s description and the direction modern society seems to be heading.

The Bible also warned of a time when moral boundaries would become so distorted that good would be labeled evil and evil would be celebrated as good.

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” — Isaiah 5:20 (KJV)

For followers of Christ, this is not simply a political issue or a cultural debate. It is a spiritual battle over truth itself.

Scripture reminds us that when societies reject God’s authority, confusion and moral disorder inevitably follow.

“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts.” — Romans 1:24 (KJV)

This does not mean Christians respond with hatred or hostility.

Instead, we respond with discernment, courage, and unwavering commitment to God’s Word, even when standing for biblical truth becomes unpopular.

This is why learning to recognize the spiritual climate of our time is so important. In another article on this site, we explore this idea more deeply in Signs of the Times: How to Discern Without Fear, where we look at how believers can remain watchful without falling into panic or speculation.

At the same time, the rapid cultural transformation happening around us raises a serious question many Christians are beginning to ask:

Are these developments simply the natural progression of a fallen world…

or could they be part of the broader pattern Scripture describes about the conditions that would exist in the last days?

Understanding the difference requires both biblical knowledge and spiritual discernment, which is why it is so important to guard ourselves against deception. In a world filled with misinformation and competing voices, believers must test everything against God’s Word, something we examine more closely in Discerning False Prophets in a Digital Age.

Because if Scripture truly is describing the times we are living in, then what we are witnessing today may be more than cultural change.

It may be a warning.

Global Conflict and the Rising Tension Among Nations

While the moral transformation of society is one piece of the puzzle, the Bible also warned that the last days would be marked by growing turmoil among the nations of the world.

In His Olivet Discourse, Jesus described several conditions that would characterize the period leading up to His return.

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” — Matthew 24:6 (KJV)

He continued by explaining that global instability would increase.

“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” — Matthew 24:7 (KJV)

History has always included wars and conflicts, but many observers today believe the scale, frequency, and interconnected nature of modern geopolitical tensions is different.

Across the globe, we see growing instability.

Conflicts in the Middle East continue to draw international attention. Tensions between major world powers are increasing. Alliances are shifting, and the threat of wider regional wars seems to be a constant concern in the headlines.

Jesus also spoke about these kinds of disturbances.

“But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass.” — Luke 21:9 (KJV)

Notice that Christ did not instruct His followers to panic when these things occur.

Instead, He told us to recognize them as part of the broader unfolding of history.

For students of biblical prophecy, these developments naturally raise deeper questions about how the modern world fits into the prophetic picture described in Scripture.

One question that frequently arises is the role of the United States in end-times prophecy. Interestingly, the Bible speaks in great detail about certain nations and regions involved in future events, yet the identity of America is far less clear. We explore this topic further in Why Isn’t America Mentioned in End Times Prophecy?

As global tensions continue to escalate, many Christians are beginning to ask whether the world may be moving toward the kind of large-scale conflict described in biblical prophecy.

While no one can know the exact timeline of God’s plan, Scripture does encourage believers to remain spiritually alert and prepared.

This is why spiritual readiness matters so much. In Countdown to Armageddon: Are You Spiritually Prepared?, we examine what the Bible says about preparing our hearts and lives for the possibility that prophetic events could unfold within our generation.

Whether these conflicts represent the beginning stages of those events or simply another chapter in human history, one thing remains certain:

The Bible warned that the last days would be marked by increasing instability among nations.

And that reality appears to be unfolding before our eyes.

Violence, Division, and the Spirit of Lawlessness

The word iniquity refers to deep moral corruption and rebellion against God’s standards. According to Jesus, as this kind of lawlessness increases, something else begins to disappear from society.

Love.

When truth is rejected and moral boundaries collapse, relationships begin to fracture. Communities divide. Civil conversation becomes increasingly difficult. Disagreement turns quickly into hostility, and anger replaces reason.

Many people today feel that this type of division is growing across society.

Political disagreements have become deeply personal. Social media amplifies outrage and fuels conflict. Instead of encouraging thoughtful discussion, modern culture often rewards confrontation and public shaming.

At the same time, concerns about public safety have become part of the national conversation. In some areas, policies such as bail reform and reduced penalties for certain crimes have sparked debate about whether the justice system is properly protecting communities. Critics argue that repeat offenders are sometimes released back onto the streets only to commit additional crimes, while others believe reforms are necessary to address deeper issues within the justice system.

Regardless of where someone stands on these policies, the broader concern many communities are expressing reflects something deeper — a growing sense that lawlessness and disorder are increasing.

The Apostle Paul warned that this pattern would intensify as history moves toward its final chapter.

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” — 2 Timothy 3:13 (KJV)

In other words, the Bible predicted that deception, corruption, and moral confusion would not simply remain steady.

They would increase.

For followers of Christ, this creates a difficult but important calling. Believers must stand firmly for truth while continuing to reflect the character of Christ in how we treat others.

Even in a divided world, the message of the gospel remains the same.

We are called to speak truth with courage, but also to respond to hostility with a different spirit — the spirit of Christ.

In a culture where disagreement often leads to anger, the example of Christ calls believers to something higher. One example of the tension between conviction and compassion can be seen in moments where individuals attempt to promote respectful dialogue about faith and values in a divided culture. We reflected on this reality in Charlie Kirk’s Legacy: Faith Over Violence in a Divided World, where we discussed the importance of standing firm in faith while refusing to respond with hatred.

Scripture also prepares believers for the possibility that standing for biblical truth may bring opposition.

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” — 2 Timothy 3:12 (KJV)

This does not mean Christians should seek conflict. But it does mean we should not be surprised when faith becomes increasingly unpopular in a culture moving away from biblical truth.

Because of this reality, spiritual endurance becomes essential. In Persecution and Endurance: How to Stand Firm, we explore how early Christians faced hostility with courage and faith — lessons that may become increasingly relevant for believers today.

As hostility and division grow across society, followers of Christ must remember that our ultimate hope does not rest in politics, governments, or cultural movements.

Our hope rests in the promises of God.

And according to Scripture, even these troubling developments may be part of the larger prophetic picture unfolding in our world.

Natural Disasters and a Groaning Creation

Beyond the moral and political turmoil we see unfolding in society, the Bible also describes another sign that would accompany the last days — disturbances within creation itself.

Jesus spoke about this when He described the conditions that would precede His return.

“And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.” — Luke 21:11 (KJV)

Throughout history the world has always experienced natural disasters. Earthquakes, storms, and famines are not new.

But many people today feel that the frequency, intensity, and global impact of these events seems to be increasing.

In recent years we have witnessed powerful hurricanes devastating entire regions, massive wildfires consuming thousands of acres, destructive earthquakes shaking major population centers, and storms that seem to grow stronger with each passing season.

For those watching world events through the lens of biblical prophecy, these developments raise an important question:

Are these simply natural cycles within the earth’s climate…

or could they be part of the broader pattern Jesus described?

The Apostle Paul also spoke about creation itself experiencing distress as history moves toward God’s ultimate plan.

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” — Romans 8:22 (KJV)

Paul’s words paint a powerful picture of a world that is not functioning as it once did — a creation that is strained under the weight of sin and waiting for restoration.

For believers, this perspective changes how we view the disasters and hardships that occur in the world around us.

These events are not simply random tragedies.

They are reminders that the world we live in is broken and temporary, awaiting the day when Christ returns to establish His kingdom and restore creation.

At the same time, Scripture repeatedly reminds believers not to respond to these events with panic or fear.

Instead, we are called to respond with faith, trust, and spiritual readiness.

In Faith Over Fear in Times of Crisis, we explore how Christians can face uncertain times with confidence in God’s promises rather than being consumed by anxiety about the future.

Storms, earthquakes, and other disasters may shake the foundations of the world around us, but they do not shake the promises of God.

For those who belong to Christ, even the most troubling events serve as reminders that this world is not our final home.

They point us toward the greater hope found in the return of Jesus.

Are These the “Birth Pains” Jesus Described?

Symbolic image of the earth experiencing storms and earthquakes representing the birth pains Jesus described in Matthew 24

After describing wars, natural disasters, and global turmoil, Jesus used a very specific phrase to explain what these events represent.

“All these are the beginning of sorrows.” — Matthew 24:8 (KJV)

In many modern translations, the phrase “beginning of sorrows” is translated as “birth pains.”

The imagery is powerful.

Just as labor pains increase in intensity and frequency as the moment of birth approaches, Jesus indicated that certain events would increase as history moves closer to His return.

This does not mean that every war, disaster, or cultural upheaval is automatically a signal that the end has arrived. The world has experienced difficult times throughout history.

But when multiple signs described in Scripture begin appearing together — moral confusion, growing hostility, global instability, and natural disasters — many believers naturally begin asking whether the world may be entering the season Jesus described.

These warnings were never meant to produce fear.

They were meant to awaken spiritual awareness.

Are You Spiritually Prepared?

The Bible teaches that history is not random. It is moving toward a moment when Christ will return and establish His kingdom.

The signs Jesus described — wars, social upheaval, and disturbances in creation — may represent the “birth pains” that signal that moment drawing closer.

But prophecy is not meant to frighten believers.

It is meant to prepare them.

In Countdown to Armageddon: Are You Spiritually Prepared?, we take a deeper look at what Scripture says about preparing our hearts and lives for the possibility that prophetic events could unfold within our generation.

Because while no one knows the exact day or hour of Christ’s return, Jesus gave a clear instruction to His followers:

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42 (KJV)

For followers of Christ, the signs described in Scripture are not meant to create panic.

They are meant to produce watchfulness, faithfulness, and hope.

Because the same Bible that warns about difficult days ahead also promises something incredible:

Jesus Christ is coming again.

The Most Important Preparation: Your Relationship With Christ

After examining the moral confusion, global conflict, social division, and natural disasters unfolding in our world today, it is easy to become overwhelmed by everything happening around us.

But the purpose of biblical prophecy was never to frighten believers.

It was meant to prepare them.

Throughout Scripture, warnings about the last days are always accompanied by a call to spiritual readiness.

Jesus made this very clear when He said:

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42 (KJV)

The most important preparation any person can make is not storing food, preparing emergency supplies, or studying world events.

Those things can be wise.

But the preparation that matters most is spiritual.

The question every person must eventually answer is this:

Where do you stand with Jesus Christ?

The Bible teaches that every human being has sinned and fallen short of God’s perfect standard.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (KJV)

Because of that sin, humanity is separated from God. But the heart of the gospel is that God made a way for that separation to be restored.

Jesus Christ came into the world to pay the price for our sins through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Salvation is not earned through good works or religious rituals.

It is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” — Romans 10:9 (KJV)

If the events unfolding around us truly are pointing toward the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, then there has never been a more important time to make sure your heart is right with God.

The Bible does not promise that the world will become easier.

But it does promise that Jesus will return.

And for those who belong to Him, that day will not be something to fear.

It will be the fulfillment of every promise God has ever made.

An Invitation That Matters More Than Anything Else

If you’ve read this far, perhaps something in this article has stirred your heart.

Maybe you’re seeing the world differently than you once did. Maybe the events unfolding around us are making you think about eternity, faith, and your relationship with God.

The Bible makes it clear that none of us are perfect.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (KJV)

But the incredible news of the gospel is that God did not leave humanity without hope.

Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Through His death on the cross and His resurrection, Jesus made a way for our sins to be forgiven and for us to be reconciled to God.

Salvation is not something we earn.

It is a gift received by faith.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” — Romans 10:9 (KJV)

If you have never placed your faith in Jesus Christ, you can do that right now.

God hears the sincere prayer of a humble heart.

A Simple Prayer of Faith

If you feel God calling you, you might pray something like this:

Lord Jesus,
I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself.
I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again.
Today I turn away from my sin and place my trust in You alone.
Forgive me, change my heart, and make me the person You created me to be.
I receive Your gift of salvation and choose to follow You from this day forward.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer sincerely, the Bible says you are now part of God’s family.

This is the most important preparation anyone can ever make.

A Final Thought

The signs we see in the world today should not lead believers into panic or despair.

They should lead us to watchfulness, faithfulness, and hope.

Because while the world may grow darker, the promises of God remain unshaken.

And the same Jesus who warned about the last days also gave His followers this assurance:

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” — Luke 21:28 (KJV)
