Signs Of The Times: How To Discern Without Fear

Man, the Headlines Hit Hard

You don’t have to be a news junkie to feel it — the world’s gone sideways. Wars breaking out, economies shaking, leaders making reckless calls, crazy natural disasters one after another. Every time I check my feed, it’s like the ground under us is shifting. And honestly? It can mess with your head if you let it.

But here’s the thing that steadies me: Jesus already told us this would happen. In Matthew 24:6 He said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.”

Think about that. Jesus doesn’t sugarcoat reality. He says yep, wars and chaos are coming, but don’t lose your cool. Don’t freak out. Don’t let fear run the show. That’s a command, not a suggestion.

So here’s where I land: the headlines are loud, but the Word is louder. The chaos is real, but so is the cross. And our job isn’t to bury our heads in the sand or binge every conspiracy video out there — it’s to discern, to stay awake, and to walk steady with Jesus.

Illustration of Christians finding hope and discernment during end times, inspired by Matthew 24 and Luke 21.

Watching the Signs Without Panic

Jesus told His disciples in Luke 21:28, “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

That flips the whole script. The world panics when it sees chaos. The believer looks up with hope. Same event, different response.

And Paul hits it in 2 Thessalonians 2. Some folks back then were already freaking out because they thought they missed the Day of the Lord. Paul says, nah — don’t get spooked, don’t buy into hype, don’t let false teaching throw you off. God’s plan is still on track.

That’s where discernment comes in. Watching the signs doesn’t mean panicking every time the ground shakes. It means filtering what we see through the Word and the Spirit.

One thing you can always count on No Matter What is Gods Word. I love when I hear people say life doesn’t come with a handbook or instructions. Really? Life absolutely comes with a handbook, it’s called the Holy Bible, and the word of god will never return void.

Pitfalls I’ve Seen (and Fallen Into)

Let me shoot straight from the hip with you. I’ve fallen into some of these myself, and maybe you’ll see yourself in here too:

  • Sensationalism. Every storm, every election, every headline turns into “This is the end!” Exhausting.
  • Fear-based teaching. Some ministries thrive on panic. If the “prophecy update” leaves you trembling more than trusting Jesus, that’s a problem.
  • Neglecting the basics. When you’re so focused on decoding the Antichrist you forget to love your neighbor. Jesus called us to faithfulness today, not just speculation about tomorrow.
  • Conspiracy rabbit holes. Hours lost to videos that stirred me up but didn’t build me up. Proverbs 18:17 nails it: “The first to state his case seems right, until another comes and cross-examines him.”

Discernment isn’t just about spotting signs in the sky. It’s about knowing the difference between truth and noise — and living like Jesus is still Lord, no matter what CNN or YouTube says.

How to Discern Like a Believer

1. Start With Scripture

News is loud, but the Bible is clear. Frame your worldview with Matthew 24, Luke 21, Revelation 13 — then look at the headlines. Not the other way around. Scripture is always the first place to go when it comes to Discernment and Wisdom

2. Slow Down Before You Share

You see some breaking post online — stop. Ask: Is this credible? Does it line up with God’s Word? Will sharing it help people trust Jesus or just fuel fear? Gaslighting is never the right wat to go.

3. Protect Your Inputs

To be blunt, you can’t binge 5 hours of doom scrolling a night and expect peace. Set limits. Replace the noise with prayer, worship, and time in the Word. You will only give yourself unnecessary anxiety doom scrolling and latching on to every conspiracy theory out there.

4. Stay in Community

Don’t process this stuff in isolation. Talk it out with believers who keep the focus on Jesus instead of hype. The world loves hype and the main stream media seams to thrive off of fear. Tune out of fear and tune in to Gods word.

5. Teach Your Family Calm

Your kids are watching. If they see you steady instead of freaking out, you’re discipling them without even saying a word. I remember watching my mom go through some pretty big storms in her life and I also remember how she prayed and remained calm. I don’t know what happened behind closed doors, but I do remember her having a sense of peace that I could never understand.

Now that I also walk with the lord I understand and have a good idea of what happened behind closed doors. Sometimes in the midst of a storm we need to cry or just meditate on the peace of God. I will tell you this, my mother is a great example of faith and even when I was on the run from the lord , her prayers continued, along with her sense of peace.

A Book That Opened My Eyes

Look, I’m not the only one saying we’ve gotta get sharper about deception. One book that really hit me hard is Living In The Daze of Deception.

If you haven’t picked it up yet, let me tell you — it’s one of the clearest wake-up calls I’ve seen for Christians right now. It walks you through how lies creep in, how half-truths spread, and how easy it is to get caught up in the wrong voices if you’re not rooted in Scripture. More than that, it shows you how to stand on truth when the whole world seems upside down.

Honestly, it’s a tool I think every believer should have on the shelf in these days. Not to scare you, but to equip you. Because we’re not called to live deceived. We’re called to walk in the light.

Fear Is the Real Enemy

Let’s not kid ourselves — fear is a weapon. The enemy uses it to shut us down, to make us doubt, to keep us from stepping out in faith.

But Scripture won’t let us live there:

  • “Do not fear, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10)
  • “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • “Perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18)

Fear says, “This is out of control.” Faith says, “God’s still in control.” Fear says, “I don’t know what’s coming.” Faith says, “I know Who’s coming.”

What Faithful Living Looks Like Right Now

  1. Stay grounded in the Word daily. Don’t just scroll news feeds — scroll the Scriptures.
  2. Pray before you panic. James 1:5 says if you need wisdom, ask God. That includes how to process the news.
  3. Prepare, but don’t obsess. Have food, water, basics. Joseph did it in Egypt. But don’t idolize your stockpile. Supplies sustain for a season, Christ sustains forever.
  4. Turn conversations into gospel moments. When co-workers or family panic over headlines, be the steady voice that points them to Jesus.

The Early Church Thrived in Chaos

Here’s some perspective: the early church lived through plagues, persecution, and leaders who literally wanted them dead. And what happened? The gospel exploded.

Why? Because they weren’t owned by fear. They were owned by Jesus. That same Spirit that carried them is alive in us today.

So yeah, the world’s shaky. But we’re not called to shake with it. We’re called to stand firm and shine.

A Prayer for These Days

Lord, You see the fear swirling in this world. Teach us to keep our eyes on You. Protect us from lies, pull us out of deception, and root us in truth. Fill us with peace that makes no sense to the world. Make us lights that point to Jesus when others panic. Amen.

  1. Thank you for this powerful reminder, Jason. I really appreciated how you contrasted the noise of the headlines with the steady truth of Scripture—it hit home when you said, “the headlines are loud, but the Word is louder.” That’s such a needed perspective right now. I also liked the point about teaching our families calm—our kids learn more from how we live than what we say, and that really resonated with me.

I do have a question: when you personally feel overwhelmed by the constant news cycle, what’s the very first thing you do to re-center your focus back on Jesus instead of fear?

    • Jenny, I’m really glad that part spoke to you, it’s something I’ve had to remind myself of often. Honestly, when the noise of the news starts to pull me into fear, the very first thing I do is stop scrolling and open my Bible. Even just reading a short Psalm out loud shifts my focus from the chaos around me to the presence of God with me. Sometimes I’ll also step outside, take a deep breath, and just pray something simple like, “Lord, help me see this through Your eyes.”

It’s not complicated, but it’s that pause, removing myself from the flood of headlines and replacing it with His Word, that makes all the difference in re-centering my heart on Jesus instead of fear.
