Empty Shelves and Ancient Warnings
If you’ve ever walked into a grocery store and seen half-empty shelves, you know the uneasy feeling that comes with it. Most of us take food for granted — we assume bread, milk, and produce will always be there. But recent years have shaken that illusion. We’ve seen supply chains collapse, prices skyrocket, and even simple staples become scarce.
The Bible tells us this shouldn’t surprise us. From Genesis to Revelation, famine shows up as both a test and a prophetic sign. Jesus Himself warned in Matthew 24:7 that “there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” And Revelation 6 paints an even starker picture of global scarcity.
This article will explore famine in prophecy, the signs of a looming food crisis today, and practical, biblical steps Christians can take to prepare. More importantly, we’ll anchor our hope in the One who called Himself the Bread of Life.

Part 1: Famine in Prophecy
Revelation 6: The Black Horse
The third horseman of Revelation rides a black horse, and the rider holds a pair of scales. A voice says, “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages…” (Revelation 6:6).
This is inflation to the extreme — where a full day’s labor barely buys enough food for one person. It’s not just about hunger; it’s about economic imbalance, where the basics of survival cost nearly everything.
Genesis 41: Joseph’s Storehouses
The story of Joseph is one of the clearest biblical models for preparation. Pharaoh’s dreams of seven fat cows and seven lean cows symbolized seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. God gave Joseph wisdom not just to interpret the dream, but to act on it — storing food in the good years to survive the bad.
This wasn’t panic. It was stewardship. Joseph’s obedience saved not only Egypt but also surrounding nations — and his own family, the future nation of Israel.
Elijah and the Widow (1 Kings 17)
During a severe drought, God sent Elijah to a widow who had nothing but a handful of flour and a little oil. By faith, she shared what she had — and God multiplied it until the famine ended.
This shows both sides: God’s miraculous provision, but also His call to share and trust Him in times of scarcity.
Amos 8: A Famine of the Word
Not all famines are physical. Amos warned of a time when there would be “a famine… not of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” In many ways, this famine has already begun in parts of the world.
The physical and spiritual always go hand in hand. Preparing for food shortages should remind us to also prepare spiritually, storing up the Word in our hearts.

Part 2: Modern Signs of a Coming Food Crisis
Global Conflicts and Supply Chains
Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have disrupted the global flow of wheat, corn, and cooking oil. Ukraine alone provided 10% of the world’s wheat exports. When war cuts supply, millions feel it.
Climate Extremes
Droughts, floods, wildfires, and hurricanes are increasingly destroying crops. In 2022–2023, the U.S. lost massive wheat harvests to drought, while Asia lost rice fields to flooding.
Rising Costs of Fertilizer and Fuel
Farmers can’t produce food without fertilizer, and fertilizer prices have skyrocketed due to energy costs and supply restrictions. Fuel prices also raise the cost of transportation, making everything more expensive at the shelf.
Inflation at the Table
We don’t have to imagine Revelation 6 — we’re getting previews. In some nations, the cost of basic bread doubled within a year. Families already struggle to choose between groceries and bills.
Population Displacement
Millions of refugees worldwide mean increased strain on food systems. When regions collapse, neighboring nations feel the pressure.
Part 3: Biblical Wisdom for Preparation
Scripture doesn’t just warn us about famine — it gives us principles for how to live wisely.
Proverbs 6:6–8 — The Ant’s Example
“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”
Preparation is wisdom, not fear.
Proverbs 21:20 — Storing vs. Wasting
“The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.”
God approves of saving for lean times.
Joseph’s Example
Joseph didn’t prepare because he distrusted God — he prepared because he trusted God’s warning. His obedience preserved life.
Balance: Stewardship vs. Hoarding
The Bible also warns against greed and hoarding. Preparation is about stewardship and generosity, not selfish stockpiling. We prepare not only for our households, but to bless others in times of need.
Part 4: Practical Food Storage
This is where faith meets action. Preparation doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, build steadily, and keep Christ at the center.
1. Start Small
Begin with a two-week supply of non-perishable food. Build it to three months, then aim for a year if possible.
2. Shelf-Stable Foods
- Rice, beans, pasta, oats.
- Canned vegetables, meats, and soups.
- Peanut butter, honey, salt, sugar.
3. Long-Term Storage
- Freeze-dried meals (25+ year shelf life).
- Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.
- Food-grade buckets for grains.
4. Gardening and Seeds
Growing your own food is one of the most sustainable preps. Focus on crops that store well (potatoes, squash, beans). Learn to save seeds for the next season.
5. Raising Small Livestock
If your situation allows, chickens provide eggs and meat. Rabbits and goats are low-maintenance protein sources.
6. Food Preservation
- Canning fruits, veggies, and meats.
- Dehydrating or freeze-drying.
- Fermenting (sauerkraut, kimchi).
7. Clean Water
Food storage means little without safe water. Invest in filters, rainwater catchment, and purification tablets.

Part 5: Keeping Christ at the Center
Preparation without faith can lead to fear or obsession. Jesus reminded us in Matthew 4:4: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Yes, we need physical food. But our ultimate security is in Christ.
Jesus as the Bread of Life
In John 6:35, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Our prepping must point us back to Him.
Sharing in Crisis
Acts 2:44–45 describes believers selling possessions to provide for one another. Real Christian prepping prepares not only for personal survival, but for kingdom service.
Mini-FAQ
Q: Is prepping a lack of faith?
No. Joseph prepared Egypt for famine by God’s command. Preparation is stewardship, not distrust.
Q: How much food should a Christian store?
As much as you’re able without crossing into hoarding. Start with two weeks, then expand.
Q: What about people who can’t afford prepping?
Start small — even an extra can or bag of rice each week adds up. God multiplies faithfulness.
Q: Will famine be worldwide or regional?
The Bible suggests both. Some famines are local, but Revelation describes global scarcity.
Closing: Hope in the Midst of Scarcity
The headlines may be grim, but famine isn’t the end of the story. In the middle of droughts, wars, and scarcity, God still provides for His people. He gave manna in the desert, oil for the widow, bread for the five thousand. He is faithful.
Yes, prepare. Store wisely. Garden, learn, and be ready. But don’t let fear drive you. Let faith lead you. The world’s systems may fail, but Christ never will.
A Prayer for Provision and Trust
Lord, You fed Israel in the wilderness, and You feed us today. Teach us to prepare wisely without fear. Provide for those who lack, and show us how to share with open hands. Above all, keep our eyes on Jesus, the Bread of Life. Amen.
